48th Grammy Awards

Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani

Mariah, Kanye And U2 In Three-Way Grammy Tie

LOS ANGELES — Traditionally, the Grammys aren't so much a sprint as they are a marathon: a three-hour televised endurance race in which many artists will surge to the forefront, take the lead in awards won, then ultimately fall back in the pack. And so far, at the two-hour mark, this year's telecast is following suit.

Mariah Carey surged to the early lead with three Grammy wins during the pre-televised ceremony (Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song for "We Belong Together" plus Best Contemporary R&B Album for The Emancipation of Mimi), though she was quickly caught by Kanye West, who's also nabbed three awards so far (for Best Rap Album, Song and Solo Performance).

The surprising contender so far is U2, who have won three Grammys of their own (Best Rock Album, Song and Performance by a Duo or Group).Close behind them are Kelly Clarkson and John Legend, with two wins each.
